Lush valleys, invaluable cultural heritage and cycling fun: meet the Lot & Dordogne Discovery Bike Tour

The Lot & Dordogne Discovery Bike Tour is one of Lot Cycling Holidays’ most popular offerings because it includes both of the majestic Lot & Dordogne river valleys with their main sights in a week of adventure and relaxation in the French countryside.

It’s no surprise that customers and fellow travelers give the tour spectacular reviews! Visitors describe their stay at Mas de Flory as “a wonderful holiday – ‘gorgeous’ in every way” and would definitely like to repeat this unique experience.

After pickup in a spacey van, you will arrive at the charming Mas de Flory, unpack and prepare for a week to remember with a truly spectacular four-course meal of regional delicacies and fabulous southern French wine. Whether you’re looking to try free range duck meals (carefully prepared foie gras in particular), the famous creamy goat cheese of Rocamadour, exquisite Quercy lamb or hand-picked local chestnuts, walnuts, fresh vegetables and fruit, you can be sure that you’ll get a chance to taste the terroir throughout the week. And of course, celebrated Malbecs as well as the trendy black wine of Cahors will be a mainstay on your dinner table.

Days two and three will introduce you to each of the two breath-taking valleys, first via a flat route along the Dordogne and then with a mostly downhill ride through the Lot. Day two promises towering riverside cliff views, scenic medieval villages like La Roque Gageac and Domme and the celebrated 12th-century Château de Beynac. On day three, you will discover one of France’s most beautiful little villages, St Cirq Lapopie, situated on a cliff high above the Lot River, and have the option to enter Grottes de Pechmerle to see striking prehistoric cave paintings.

A return to the Dordogne will follow on day four, with a relaxing biking afternoon on quiet roads and through tranquil villages. And the destination of the day, Sarlat-la-Canéda, is a lovely medieval town of stone buildings and car-free cobblestone streets. Day five presents one of the highlights of the tour: the renowned pilgrimage site of Rocamadour, with its dramatic setting on the very cliffs of the Dordogne’s tributary, the Alzou. Ever since the 12th century, Rocamadour has been an important stop along the Way of Saint James, and it continues to be celebrated today for its historic architecture and cultural importance.

Day six is a relaxing ride along vineyards, picturesque little towns and impressive chateaux, with a thrilling section of downhill biking at Col de Crayssac. The afternoon ends with an exquisite wine tasting at a chateau before heading back to Mas de Flory for another gourmet four-course dinner. And after a hearty and healthy breakfast on day seven, it will be time to say goodbye… with a promise to return for another unforgettable week of cycling as soon as possible!
